Prof David Gilchrist
Research Fellow
Professor David Gilchrist is director of the Centre for Public Value at the University of Western Australia’s Business School. He is a chartered accountant, Fellow of CA ANZ and holds a PhD in economic history from the University of Notre Dame Australia. He is a professor of accounting and chief investigator and convenor of the Australian Non-profit Accounting Standards Project.
David has held senior roles in executive leadership, governance and consulting for government, commerce and nonprofit organisations. He has been deputy executive officer of the Parliamentary Services Department in Western Australia and was assistant auditor general for Western Australia.
He has also consulted to most Australian governments, including the Commonwealth, and many human services peak bodies in matters pertaining to human and community services delivery (including the NDIS, aged care, child protection, immigration services and employment services), accountability and reporting, economic analysis and economic modelling, data analysis and assessment, and sustainability analysis and reporting.
David has undertaken significant long-term practice and research related to nonprofit and government accounting, reporting and sustainability. He has developed a research program examining the economics of human services and contributed significantly to policy and practice across Australia and internationally.
He has written over 200 industry reports and published many articles related to this area. He has written, edited or contributed to ten books. David was appointed a Fellow of the Western Australian Parliament in 2021 and awarded a Meritorious Service Award by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand in 2024.
