The economic horror show facing Australia’s new prime minister

Quartz.com. a digital business news outlet, looks at the economic situation facing our new Prime Minister, and chats with David Hetherington about what we can expect.

Australia has had 24 consecutive years without a recession, but our economy is slowing, and we have an entire generation of voters who have only known economic prosperity.

Says David: “The longer you go without a recession, the more distant the memory becomes and the impetus to keep investing in that next wave of growth and job creation is less as a result.”

Australia partied too hard during the boom and, says David, we had governments who thought the high commodity prices would be around forever.

Now, as economic growth falters the outlook is pretty dim and Australia could be “about to wake up with an empty wallet and whopping hangover”.
