Per Capita welcomes the Treasurer’s strong early commitment to tax reform as a key part of Australia’s economic future at yesterday’s National Press Club address.
Per Capita has long argued that tax reform is not just possible, but essential. It is encouraging to see this government hit the ground running and begin this work even before our new Parliament opens.
We believe tax reform can correct the mistakes of the past and address growing inequality, tackle the economic pressures our country faces today, and build a future where the Australian concept of the fair go is not just a slogan of the past, but something real and achievable for generations to come.
Earlier this year, Per Capita’s Community Tax Summit brought together people from across civil society to explore practical solutions to the challenges in our tax system. A Summary Report is available here.
Together with insights from our annual Tax Survey, it is clear Australians support a tax system that is fair and sustainable for everyone. A system that rewards work, supports innovation, properly funds public services, and promotes productivity.
The Treasurer’s call for specific, practical, and nationally focused ideas, alongside his commitment to an open door and an open mind, reflects what Per Capita has been working towards. We applaud the government’s focus on consensus and practical outcomes. This is exactly what this moment requires.
Per Capita will continue contributing to this important conversation through its upcoming Green Paper on Tax Reform, considering big ideas and outlining a clear and practical roadmap to a fairer and more sustainable tax and transfer system. We are committed to putting forward ideas that are evidence-based, ready to be implemented, and that contribute to building a new vision for Australia based on fairness, shared prosperity, and social justice.
