Experts push for more women in cybersecurity

Independent think tank Per Capita last year warned in research commissioned by cybersecurity firm CyberCX that Australia would need an additional 30,000 cyber professionals by 2026 to defend the nation’s digital systems from a significant surge in ransomware and data theft extortion.

But the report’s author, Per Capita chief economist Michael D’Rosario, told the Financial Review that those estimates were “modest” and were calculated before the high-profile attack on Optus underscored the extent to which many Australian businesses were at risk.

“It’s apparent that there’s an even greater shortfall now,” Dr D’Rosario said. “And we’re struggling to address that shortfall.”
