Emily Millane talks ageing stereotypes on ABC News Breakfast

July 25, 2013

Emily MIllane looks at the the Human Rights Commission’s Report on ageing stereotypes, which finds that older people are often invisible in the media, and when they are not, they are portrayed as frail or feeble.

This has effects for older people, particularly when it comes on employment. They are discouraged from looking for work because employers consider them too old. Even as low as 45, if you are out of the workforce it’s hard to get back in.

Older people are a rich resource, with extensive corporate knowledge, we overlook them at our financial peril. Says Emily, it’s time for the media to be a bit more accurate in our reporting of older people.
