Per Capita is delighted to announce that Dr John Falzon OAM will join our team as Senior Fellow, Inequality and Social Justice on 1 November 2018.

Dr Falzon is a sociologist, poet and social justice advocate, and was national CEO of the St Vincent de Paul Society from 2006 to 2018. He has written and spoken widely on neoliberalism and the structural causes of inequality and has long been engaged in the collective movement for social justice.

Per Capita’s Executive Director, Emma Dawson, said “We are thrilled that John is joining Per Capita to lend his voice to our fight against inequality in Australia.

“John’s expert knowledge of policy issues related to economic insecurity, housing and homelessness, social security and workers’ rights, along with his proven track record of advocating for those at the margins of our society, make him a perfect choice as the newest member of the Per Capita team.”

Dr Falzon’s work at Per Capita will focus on social security reform, housing and homelessness, workers’ rights and rebuilding the concept of the common good across our society.

John Falzon said “Neoliberalism continues to tear people’s lives apart while structurally undermining the common good. As a leading progressive think tank, Per Capita continues to show that there is an achievable alternative. I am deeply excited to be joining Per Capita in the collective fight against inequality.”

Dr Falzon has served on numerous boards and advisory committees for both government and civil society, including the Australian Council of Social Service Board, the Australian Social Inclusion Board, the Deputy Prime Minister’s Global Financial Crisis Community Response Taskforce, the Energy White Paper High Level Consultative Committee, the Council of Non-Government Organisations on Mental Health, the Shelter NSW Board and the NSW Premier’s Social Justice Reference Group.

He is the author of numerous articles, opinion pieces and book chapters, and two books: The language of the unheard (Garratt 2012) and a collection of poems, Communists like us (UWAP, 2017). In 2014 he was an Australian Human Rights Medal Finalist and in 2015 he received an Order of Australia Medal for service to the community through social welfare organisations.
